‘Our hearts just broke’: Former Home and Away star Christie Hayes shares emotional update of IVF journey

Christie Hayes has been candid about her fertility journey on The Hit Network’s Dan & Christie show in the past.
She’s just opened up again with an emotional update.
The radio host and former Home and Away star has recently undergone another round of IVF with her husband Justin Coombes-Pearce.

After undergoing an embryo transfer, Hayes decided to do an at-home pregnancy test to avoid “that horrendous phone call (with the doctors) that [she’s] had before where they tell you that your embryo transfer failed”.
“I didn’t want to do that anymore. So, I did what you’re not supposed to do, and I decided to do a pregnancy test at home,” she told her cohost Dan Taylor.
Hayes was immediately filled with excitement when she got a positive result on two separate tests.
“I took one… and I stopped for a second, I saw a double line: a positive. And I went OMG but we didn’t want to get our hopes up,” she explained.
“And then again the next day, this is before the two week time is up when you get that blood test to go and confirm it I went and did another one, and it was positive. A faint line, a very, very faint line, but absolutely there on each (test).”

But that excitement was quickly replaced with disappointment.
“On Friday, hubby Justin and I had to go in and get the news because I had a blood test to confirm this pregnancy. I walked in and I said to them, ‘OK, we’re here, we want to do this in person not on the phone,’ she explained.
“She looked at me, this beautiful nurse, and she said, ‘It’s positive but it’s not viable’,” Hayes said while fighting back tears.
Hayes’ voice cracked with emotion as she continued to speak.
“Our hearts just broke. It’s grief all over again. That’s the worst thing with IVF, it’s the waiting and waiting and the waiting, and then the grief, no one tells you about,” she said.
“You put so much time and energy into something, you try so hard, and then it’s ripped away from you.”

Hayes told Taylor that she is “OK now” and she hopes that other people going through similar experiences can feel comfort in knowing they’re not alone.
“I hope that if anyone out there has heard this and makes them feel less alone I’m glad that we can talk about it,” she said.
“But do what I’m doing now, lean into your friends, talk about it with people. You know guys out there who are struggling to become fathers ’cause of IVF struggles with your partners, reach out to your mates. It’s more common than what we think and we’ll get there.”
