Home and Away star Lynne McGranger has issued a warning to fans ahead of Irene Roberts’s exit scenes.

The soap legend is bowing out after 33 years in the role, and although we don’t know for sure what her exit storyline is yet, the actor revealed that there will be an obvious moment where the storyline begins.

Speaking on Australian radio station Hope’s breakfast show, McGranger explained that she was coming down with a nasty case of influenza in the lead up to her exit, which was announced in February.

In the interview, McGranger confirmed that her illness had peaked on the day after she shot her final scene, with the actor quipping that viewers will know her character’s final run is imminent as her voice starts to go.

“People who watch the show will probably realise when that last episode comes to air. They’ll go, ‘what is going on with her voice?'” joked the actor, who is the longest-serving female cast member of an Australian soap opera.

She also revealed that she shared her final scene with Leah Patterson actor Ada Nicodemou, and noted that her co-star was left very emotional despite the mundane nature of the scene.

“Ada was just a blubbering mess for weeks,” recalled McGranger. “All I’m doing is making Leah have a coffee!”

She also joked that she unsuccessfully pitched an alien abduction storyline multiple times to no avail, but did manage to convince the soap bosses to give her the exit plot she wanted.

While McGranger is keeping schtum on what that storyline entails, a recent episode has hinted as to what it could be, and with the final result potentially being heartbreaking.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.45pm on Channel 5, with repeat screenings at 6pm on 5STAR and first-look screenings at 6.30pm on 5STAR. Selected classic episodes are available via Prime Video in the UK.
